Some kind of post about politics

So this is something I threw up on Reddit today:

I've had politics on my mind since January. The election was one thing, but the last few months have set my brain to boil with the Black Live Matter movement, police shootings, political conventions, police getting shot, and the rise of Trump. I figure somewhere in there is a good story idea.

The problem I have is that my current style for setting up stories often starts with worldbuilding. However, I don't know how you can adapt the stories and situation that have consumed the last few months by starting at such a high level. Everything that I start on using my standard strategy feels too high. Too big picture.

Do you guys find that you have to change your writing prep drastically depending on where you get your inspiration from, or because of the kind of story you want to tell. Is a story about police shootings or local political unrest best started from a character perspective, or can you work on the situation and setting first and get the same level of quality and feeling from the story?

Is there a best practice for topics that hit people so intensely like the topics from current events?
